What are living books?
As described by Charlotte Mason, living books are:
- Engaging and rich in ideas
- Written with beauty and authenticity
- Inspiring curiosity and creativity
- Encouraging a lifelong passion for learning
Living books are exceptional. They go beyond the ordinary and help young children build language, imagination, and a love for reading.
Start Your Mornings with a Fresh Story to Spark Wonder
As we began our homeschooling journey, I quickly discovered that read-aloud books for kindergarten and living books were a magic spark in our days. To make our mornings more intentional, I started a simple ritual—placing a new living book upright and facing outward next to our homeschool basket in the dining room, our main learning space.
As the kids shuffle down the stairs in the morning, they’re met with the sight of a fresh story waiting to be explored. As a result, their curiosity is instantly piqued, drawing them in before the day has even begun. We make sure everyone has plenty to eat (keeping those busy little hands occupied!), say our morning prayer, read our Bible story, and then—with a bit of excitement—we dive into the day’s new book.
Even in the midst of our sometimes busy but often slow mornings, most importantly, this small habit sets the tone for a day filled with purpose, connection, and wonder.
Seasonal Learning with Read-Aloud Books for Kindergarten
Introducing seasonally themed books can be a wonderful way to connect learning with the rhythms of the year, making each season feel fresh, relevant, and full of new opportunities for exploration and play. Nevertheless, while not all of these books are tied to the season, they are beloved favorites that bring joy and inspiration year-round.
